The SpaceX Falcon Heavy Launch is set for tomorrow – February 6, 2018 at 1:30 pm ET  – and yes I’m excited to finally see it happen! If all goes according to plan, the real launch will herald a new range for possibilities in space flight and quite possibility be the best automobile marketing opportunity ever imagined.

Since it is a first test flight, Elon Musk likes to send whimsical cargo for first flights there is a real possibility things could go wrong, and has elected to send his original red Tesla Roadster to be launched towards Mars while playing David Bowie’s Space Odyssey as it hurls through space at “about 11 km/s (7mi/s) and travel 400 million km (250 million mi) from Earth.”

Snippet from SpaceX description about the test:

When Falcon Heavy lifts off, it will be the most powerful operational rocket in the world by a factor of two. …

Its first stage is composed of three Falcon 9 nine-engine cores whose 27 Merlin engines together generate more than 5 million pounds of thrust at liftoff, equal to approximately eighteen 747 aircraft. … Falcon Heavy was designed from the outset to carry humans into space and restores the possibility of flying missions with crew to the Moon or Mars.

Following SpaceX the last few years and seeing so much progress in such a short amount of time truly amazes me. Being a fan of the Tony Stark characters of the fictional world, its awe inspiring to know there are true visionaries like Elon Musk in the real world who are making science fiction become more and more into science fact.

I’ll be watching and wishing all at SpaceX the best of luck when the Falcon Heavy finally does lift off! See the animation below:
